Writing Groups

Our writing and discussion groups are open to all students, faculty, and staff. For more information about any of our groups, please reach out to james.hamby@mtsu.edu.

Culture & Conversation

Culture & Conversation is a discussion group that offers anyone learning English a chance to practice their conversational skills. There will be a different topic each week, and we will discuss subjects such as food traditions, culture shock, campus life, and more.

Day and Time: Thursdays 5:00-6:00 pm

Location: University Writing Center (LIB 362)

Creative Writing Group 

Our Creative Writing Group welcomes writers of all kinds of genres–poetry, short stories, novels, drama, screenplays, lyrics, creative nonfiction, and more. You can share your writing with others, workshop your ideas, and respond to writing prompts.

Day and Time: Friday 2:00-3:00 pm

Location: LIB 387 (In the Curriculum Collection section)

Online Creative Writing Group 

If you can’t make it to campus but still want to participate in creative, our Online Creative Writing Group meets via Zoom and does all the same things a face-to-face creative writing group does. Please email uwcenter@mtsu.edu to receive the Zoom link.

Day and Time: Thursday 6:00-7:00 pm

Lunch & Trauma: A Safe Space to Write

This writing group is open to everyone. Nobody has to write or speak about their trauma; rather, this writing group creates a safe space where writers can explore their own experiences and thoughts as they choose. Join us every week for writing and lunch

Dissertation and Thesis Support Group

If you are writing a doctoral dissertation, a master’s thesis, or an honor’s thesis you can join us for discussion, support, and strategies for finishing your project.

Dungeons & Dragons Writing Group

Learn how to create compelling campaigns and characters and workshop your ideas with others.
